Trip Tips

If you have traveled around the Czech Republic, you know there is no shortage of beautiful and interesting places. The Trutnov region is definitely one of them. The combination of the Krkonoše mountain ridges, mountain rivers and streams, nearby rock cities, historical monuments, and interesting spots in the foothills makes the outskirts of Trutnov, where Terasa do lesa is located, a great starting point. Whether you are here for winter or summer sports, hiking, or simply relaxing, you are in the right place.

Sněžka

The highest mountain in the Czech Republic definitely deserves your attention. You can hike up Sněžka from Pec pod Sněžkou via Obří důl, over Růžová hora, or from the other side from Horní Malá Úpa. You can also take the cable car, which will take you all the way to the summit of Sněžka.

If you can, we recommend visiting outside the main tourist season, when you can enjoy the beauty of the Krkonoše Mountains in a quieter atmosphere. Keep in mind that it is noticeably colder on the mountain peaks than in the valley, so bring warmer clothing and, above all, comfortable footwear suitable for the mountains.

Pec pod Sněžkou

Pec pod Sněžkou is a popular mountain resort and traditional ski area in the heart of the Krkonoše Mountains. It takes about 30 minutes to get there by car from our apartment. Pec offers activities year-round. In winter you can enjoy skiing or the year-round bobsled track, and in summer, for example, a rope park. Of course, there is also beautiful nature and plenty of opportunities for hiking.

Adršpach and Teplice Rocks

Adršpach Rocks are among the most famous and most extensive rock cities in the Czech Republic and are definitely worth a visit. During the main tourist season, you should expect a larger number of visitors and you need to book the entry in advance.
Teplice Rocks tend to be a bit quieter, but no less beautiful, and no reservation is required there.

If you are looking for lesser-known and quieter spots, you can also head to Bischofstein or Křížový vrch. A little further on you will find the Broumov Walls with the Bledné skály rock maze, or the tabletop mountain Ostaš. These places also offer beautiful views, interesting rock formations, and above all, more peace and quiet.

Janské Lázně

15 minutes by car you will reach Janské Lázně, where a pleasant spa colonnade is worth a visit. From Janské Lázně, a gondola cable car runs up to Černá hora, which is also the starting point of the local ski area and operates in both winter and summer season. Another popular spot is the Treetop Walk (Stezka korunami stromů), which offers beautiful views of the surrounding Krkonoše nature. The complex also includes a children’s playground and a bear enclosure.

Černá hora

In winter you can enjoy groomed cross-country skiing trails at the summit, and under good snow conditions also a 4 km sledge run. Via the saddle by Hoffmanovy boudy you can reach another Krkonoše ski area in Černý Důl. The resort has a more family-friendly character and is suitable for skiers of all levels. Černý Důl is part of the SkiResort ČERNÁ HORA – PEC, so with a single ski pass you can also head to Černá hora, Pec pod Sněžkou, or Velká Úpa.

In summer, the upper cable car station is a great starting point for mountain hikes, for example toward the well-known mountain cottages Kolínská bouda or Pražská bouda. You can rent scooters or e-bikes here, and for the youngest visitors there is the Kabinka children’s park with a variety of attractions.

Mladé Buky

Just 5 minutes by car from the apartment is the family-friendly Mladé Buky ski area. It is ideal especially for families with children and beginner skiers who want to learn to ski at their own pace or improve their skills. Under good snow conditions, you can also use the groomed cross-country trails at the Grund Resort Mladé Buky golf course (free of charge), which is right next to the local ski area. In the summer months, you can enjoy a refreshing time at the water playground in the Hříčky Buky complex. It offers plenty of water attractions and fun for kids and adults alike – the perfect spot for a summer days full of play and refreshment.

The complex also includes bike trails of various difficulty levels.

Trutnov

Trutnov, also known as the gateway to the Krkonoše Mountains, is a pleasant town surrounded by beautiful nature. Here you will find a picturesque historic center with Krakonošovo náměstí (Krakonoš Square), arcades, and a range of cafés, restaurants, and small shops. Also worth a visit are the Municipal Park, a walk along the Úpa River, or the Gablenz Monument on Šibeník hill, which offers a beautiful view of the town and surrounding countryside.

For mountain bike lovers, Trutnov Trails is a great place for a solid dose of adrenaline. The network of trails around Trutnov offers routes of various difficulty levels.

ZOO Dvůr Králové

Safari Park Dvůr Králové is another interesting place nearby. It offers a world of African animals – giraffes, lions, rhinos, zebras, and more. The biggest highlight is the Safari, where you can drive right through the enclosures among herds of African ungulates. The park is a great spot for a full-day trip for both kids and adults and is definitely worth a visit.

Kuks Hospital

Kuks Hospital is among the most significant Baroque monuments in Bohemia. The complex will enchant you with its monumental Baroque architecture, the striking Church of the Holy Trinity, and above all the unique statues of Virtues and Vices by Matyáš Bernard Braun. The complex also includes a beautiful herb garden.

Our personal tips

If you would like to enjoy a quiet walk in beautiful mountain nature and avoid busier tourist routes, head to the Rýchory ridge. You can start the hike, for example, from the Stachelberg artillery fortress (also worth a look, being one of the largest pre-war fortification structures), from the vanished village of Sklenařovice, or from the picturesque mountain settlement of Albeřice.

Rýchory is an ideal place for those looking for peace and quiet, beautiful views, and some of the lesser-known corners of the Krkonoše Mountains.

Another tip for beautiful Krkonoše nature could be a loop from Velká Úpa through Javoří důl, than the way to Vlašské boudy and back through Vavřincův důl, or via Velké Tippeltovy boudy. You can enjoy a pleasant hike along mountain streams here.

A little further, toward Pec pod Sněžkou, is the lower cable car station to Portášovy boudy. From here you can head into the unique Pecka Play Landscape, a great destination for a trip with children. There are wooden play elements inspired by Krkonoše nature, which will entertain kids while introducing them life in mountains. You will also find one of the most beautiful views in the entire Krkonoše range here. You can combine the trip with a cable car ride and a walk along the surrounding mountain paths. Here too you can rent a scooter and enjoy the ride back down to Velká Úpa.
